As a PTC/GPT user myself being online for years noticing the difference is a skill I've picked up through experience of using many different sites. Some are indeed bad with bad motives but are still good for advertising with but the ones that say they pay $1 a click etc only really pay a percentage of the sites worth as a revenue sharing site.
